Why high ranking in Google is important - and what CTR has to do with it

A high position in Google is very important for your website's online visibility. The higher you rank in search results, the more likely people are to click on your link. This is not only good for your visitor numbers, but also for your conversions, leads and turnover.

An important key figure related to this is the Click-Through Rate, in short CTR.

What is CTR (Click-Through Rate)?

CTR represents Click-Through Rate, also known in Dutch as click frequency called. It is a unit of measurement that shows how many people click on your link compared to the total number of times it has been displayed (impressions).

Example:
If your page is shown 1,000 times in Google's search results and is clicked on 75 times, your CTR is: (75 ÷ 1,000) × 100 = 7,5%

What is a good CTR?

Although the ideal Click-Through Rate (CTR) depends on sector, target audience and channel, it is generally true that a higher CTR leads to more website visitors and therefore more effective online visibility.

Many advertisers tend to have too high expectations of their clickthrough rates. Unfortunately, the idea that a majority of people who see your ad will actually click through is unrealistic. In reality, the average Click-Through Rate (CTR) in Google Ads is significantly lower than is often thought.

According to Google data, the average CTR is typically between 0.41% and 0.71%. This means that for every 100 people who see your advert, on average only one to two will actually click on it.

A CTR above 07.% is therefore often considered good to very good, depending on the industry and type of campaign. Campaigns with a higher CTR usually indicate relevant targeting, effective ad copy and a strong match with the user's search intent.

What is a good CTR?

When looking specifically at display advertising and bannering, the average Click-Through Rate (CTR) usually even lower than for search ads in Google Ads.

| “If your banner scores higher than 0.7%, you can consider it an excellent result.”

As a general guideline, an average CTR of about 0.4% to 0.7% for display campaigns. While this percentage may seem low, it is quite normal in this context.

Does your banner score above the 0,7%, then it actually performs above the market average, indicating an effective message, visually strong elaboration and/or relevant targeting.
