SEO and GEO: found in Google, mentioned by AI

Skilled professionals ask Google and AI assistants for a supplier. A free measurement shows whether your company is included in those answers.

What it is

What are SEO and GEO?

SEO (search engine optimisation) involves working on your website to rank high in Google when a skilled professional or buyer searches for what you provide. GEO (generative engine optimisation) concerns the answers from AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and whether your company is mentioned in them.

The difference lies in what the searcher sees. Google displays a list of results from which they choose themselves. An AI assistant provides one summarised answer and mentions a handful of companies or sources. A supplier not included there is not visible to that searcher.

Both rely on the same foundation: a site that is technically sound, answers specific questions and is mentioned in authoritative places. Measure where you stand now with the free SEO & GEO check. You will receive the report within two working days.

Why a media company views this differently

An agency optimises your website. We also ensure that you are written about.

Google and AI assistants derive their answers from public sources. If there is nothing about you on a public platform, there is nothing to find. And we ensure that there is something.

We write editorial articles about your product, service or project, or thematically, on your sector's platform: public, without login and indexed, and with video and podcast always with a full transcript. Each year, around 6,000 editorial articles appear on our platforms; yours can be among them. If you also want your own website in order, we set it up technically and content-wise so that Google and AI assistants can read it well.

The evidence

What our content delivers in Google, measured with a client.

One of our clients supplies attachments and machines for excavators and wheel loaders. We created content about their company, products and services, published it on RecyclePro, Warehouse & Logistiek and Grond/Weg/Waterbouw and measured afterwards: per article on which search terms it ranks in the top 10 of Google, and whether Google cites it as a source in its AI response. The client remains anonymous here; the figures come from their actual campaign report.

Positions in Google move with the market and with what others publish. This is a snapshot on the measurement date, no prediction and no promise.

Technology

What do Google and AI assistants look at?

First, a search engine must be able to read your site. This requires a robots.txt that allows crawlers, including those from AI services, an up-to-date sitemap and pages that load quickly. An llms.txt file summarises in plain language for language models who you are and which pages matter. Then it must be clear what is on a page: structured data describes in fixed fields who you are, what you provide and for whom. Our own site shows how this looks.

An AI assistant cites passages that directly answer a question. A page with the answer in the first sentences, concrete facts and a recognisable sender is more useful for this than general promotional text. Finally, who writes about you counts. Mentions and links on authoritative sites in your sector are considered. A partner article on a platform is such a source: trade information on a domain with authority, with your name included.

Comparison

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO and GEO largely use the same signals, but the searcher sees a different type of result.

SEO

Goal. Rank high in search results so the searcher clicks through to your site

Where the searcher looks. Google and other search engines, in a list of results

What counts. Relevant pages per search term, technical setup, loading speed and links from other sites

Technology. A crawlable site, a sitemap and good loading times

What you measure. Positions, impressions and clicks in Google

What a platform adds. A partner article with a link to your site, which is found on search queries where your own site does not yet score

GEO

Goal. Be mentioned or cited in the answer of an AI assistant

Where the searcher looks. ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and other AI assistants, in one summarised answer

What counts. Passages that directly answer a question, structured data and mentions on authoritative sources

Technology. Additionally, access for AI crawlers and an llms.txt file

What you measure. Whether AI crawlers can read your site and whether your company is mentioned in the questions your customers ask

What a platform adds. A mention on a domain with authority in your sector, which can serve as a source for AI answers

Working on one often helps the other: a fast, well-structured site with clear answers scores in Google and is useful for an AI assistant. In the free check, technical setup, content and AI discoverability are therefore sections of one score.

What determines the price

What does working on SEO and GEO cost?

The check is free and without obligation. We do not have a standard price for implementation, as the work varies per site: sometimes it is mainly quick wins that your own web developer picks up, sometimes structural work on the technical setup or content is needed. After the report, you know what is going on. In an introduction, we go through it together and you receive a tailored proposal. If you also want to appear as a source on a platform, the possibilities per title are in the media kit 2027.

  • The findings

What the report shows, and how much of it is a quick win.

  • The size of your site

The number of pages, languages and templates that need to be adjusted.

Good to know

Questions about SEO and GEO

Is your question not listed? Call us or ask it via the contact form.

Can my company be found in ChatGPT?

Yes, but no one can enforce it. ChatGPT and other AI assistants compile their answers from sources they can read and trust. You increase the chance by making your site accessible to AI crawlers, directly answering your customers' questions and being mentioned on authoritative sites in your sector.

Which AI search engines count?

The best known are ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, the summarised answer above Google's search results. Additionally, there are Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, among others. They each work in their own way but all use public web pages as sources.

How long does it take to see results?

Quick wins and technical improvements can often be implemented immediately. When search engines pick them up varies per site and per search term. A new measurement is useful about four weeks after the first improvements go live. Work on content and mentions usually takes more time.

Do you guarantee a position in Google or a mention in ChatGPT?

No. No one determines what Google or an AI assistant shows, so be cautious with anyone who promises that. What we do: first measure, then improve and then measure again, so you see what changes.

What does it cost if you carry out the improvements?

That depends on what the report shows. Therefore, we do not mention a standard rate. In an introduction, we go through the report together and you receive a proposal for your situation. Taking the implementation with us is not a requirement: the report is written so that your own web developer can work with it.

Does a partner article on a platform help for GEO?

It can help. A partner article is placed on a platform with authority in your sector, remains online and is indexed by Google. As a result, it can serve as a source for AI answers, with your name included. Read more about partner articles.

What is an llms.txt file?

A text file in the root directory of your website that tells language models in plain language who you are and which pages are important. It is a proposal for a standard and not a requirement; not every AI service uses it. You can see our own llms.txt above.

For which companies is SEO and GEO important?

For companies whose customers orient themselves online before making contact: manufacturers, suppliers, contractors and installers who sell to skilled professionals. In a niche market, an AI answer often mentions only a few names, so the difference between being mentioned or not is significant.
